Vienna

Things we love:

Freewave wifi hotspots all over the city, no password required.
Vienna loves bikes. It’d be hard to find a more cycle friendly city, there is no shortage of dedicated paths, parking and bikers.
The Daniel Hotel, with its rooftop bees, rentable Vespas and killer bar.
‘Gemütlichkeit’, the kicked back, relaxed culture you’ll find in the traditional coffee houses.
Its home to the world’s oldest zoo.

Things we wish we’d known:

They must like their Sunday sleep-ins, nothing is open.
Most bars don’t open until late, always check.
How good Vienna coffee tastes.
The trams are both easy and convenient.
Naschmarkt, an eating, drinking, socialising extravaganza isn’t open on Sundays, damn.

Alois Daniel Bakery
Alois Daniel Bakery

Calling this place a bakery doesn’t really do it justice. The ground floor eating spot at the quirky Design Hotel is the heart and soul of the lobby. It’s a restaurant and chilled coffee hangout by day that morphs into Read More

Bar Italia
Bar Italia

Another all-day drinking spot, Bar Italia is on Vienna’s version of 5th Avenue, Mariahilfer Straße and the guests are just as stylish as their fancy shopping bags. It’s a small bar, with a high ceiling, dark wooden floors and red Read More

Café Drechsler
Café Drechsler

Across the street from the incredible, bustling Naschmarkt is the unassuming Café Drechsler, a traditional Viennese coffee house founded in 1919. It was given a little makeover by Sir Terrence Conran in 2007 (which explains the cup & saucer light Read More

Café Kunsthalle
Café Kunsthalle

The Viennese are so outdoorsy; it’s hard to swing a cat without hitting a cyclist or a tree. Café Kunsthalle, (technically the museum’s café) is an oasis in the city, with a lovely covered huge deck with communal tables, pots Read More

Café Schwarzenberg
Café Schwarzenberg

Traditional Viennese coffee house by day, jazzy live music spot by night. Café Schwarzenberg is one of the grandest of the old cafés, with generous windows looking over the street, a crowd of stylish locals breakfasting over giant newspapers and Read More

Café Sperl
Café Sperl

Café Sperl was Hitler’s favourite coffee house, but don’t let this put you off. It’s really, really old in here: ceilings are high and ornate, velvet couches are faded from wear, the marble slab table-tops are sort of chipped, walls Read More

Puff Bar
Puff Bar

It was only after a couple of suspicious chaps wandered in, hands in pockets, looked around sheepishly and promptly left, that we learned of this bar’s former life. It was a strip-club and then some according to Fritzl, the (hot) Read More

Roberto American Bar
Roberto American Bar

When you get to Vienna, just remember one word: Roberto. Once you’re here, you’re pretty much staying put until they tell you to leave because they’re closing, the sun’s come up, or they’re out of booze. Roberto Pavlovic is probably the Read More
