Cable Bay Vineyards

BARCHICK SAYS

Smack bang on top of a cliff on Waiheke Island overlooking the Hauraki Gulf and City, the views at Cable Bay are pretty spectacular, especially from the comfort of a beanbag on the infinity lawn with a glass of chilled wine in hand. If you get bored of the vista, check out the art installations scattered around you for more eye candy.

This place is all about relaxed elegance, so don’t rock up in ripped jeans. The eclectic crowd keeps things interesting here, especially when they get dropped off in their private choppers... for real. Wander around the olive grove while you wait for your tapas or go visit the wine cellar or shop, where you can buy their entire collection, including some harder to find vintages.

Open from 11am everyday this is the perfect place to get down to a little daytime drinking before wandering off into the night. They do a damn tasty chardonnay, think light and refreshing.

NB. To get here take the ferry from Auckland (about 30 minutes from either downtown or Halfmoon Bay), from where you can catch a bus or a cab to the vineyards.
