BARCHICK SAYS

This used to be where the butchers in the Meatpacking District would come after a long day’s work for a steak sandwich and a beer. But what was one of the oldest bodegas (Danish pub) in town changed owners back in 2009, and the new management like to throw a party, it is run by four DJs after all. Last time BarChick went we played the tambourine on the bar top in an impromptu bartender music-making session with a band of toy instruments. Why not.

It’s kept the old butcher pub interiors with brown paneling and red lamps, so it’s super relaxed. The animal murals and band stickers all over the walls give it a bit more edge. They have a DJ booth in the corner where they play a mix of rhythm and blues and funk soul classics, which people dance to at the weekends.

It’s not all about the party though – they want this to be the kinda bar you can rock up to any time and be welcomed. In the weeks it’s laidback and super friendly with karaoke, quizzes and other nice community shindigs, like their Sunday flea market.

It’s small enough that you can smoke indoors (licensing laws exempt venues smaller than 40 square metres), or if the sun is out, take over one of the picnic tables outside. Cheap drinks, good tunes, nice people. It’s good enough the butchers still come in for a drink and snack come lunchtime.
