Kansas Smitty's

BARCHICK SAYS

What happens when a jazz band open a bar? They hit hot neighbourhood bar Off Broadway and open up the sexiest underground jazz and Julep den in the city.

Inspired by the swinging hedonistic vibes and big booze scene in Kansas - the only city in the US that ignored Prohibition (rebel), this joint is home to The Kansas Smitty's House Band and these guys know how to get things swinging. It’s small down here, we’re talking one room so you’ll have no trouble finding the bar and it may not be all that on the eye but you’re here to use your ears anyway, so get over it.

In true Kansas style the cocktail list (created by Milk & Honey’s Sean Fennelly) is all about the old school Julep;  hit the menu before it gets heaving because you’re gonna want to try them all. Start at the top if classic’s your thing or pick from the bottom for a twist. We couldn’t get enough of Ous Est Le Menthe (Cognac, sherry, tonka bean, cascara, star anise, walnut and nutmeg). If you’ve arrived a little early (trust us, you should) grab a seat and wait for the band to start, they kick off when the room gets full. Don’t know much about bebop jazz? It’s easy to fit in, just clap when everyone claps and don’t try to talk during the set. You will be shushed.
