Noble Rot

BARCHICK SAYS

Bloomsbury’s got itself a perfect wine bar that looks like it was plucked right outta Paris circa the 1940s.  Everything about the place is vintage Parisian from the green walls to the huge windows, refurbed light fixtures, dark wood paneling and don't forget the roaring log fires.

This bolthole’s on Lamb's Conduit Street, amongst the wine shops and cheesemongers, and has been standing there since 1700. It’s been a legendary wine bar for the last 40 years (RIP Vats) before transferring to very capable hands: the wine connoisseurs behind Noble Rot magazine are on the grapes while ex- Sportsman Head Chef Stephen Harris is doing his gourmet thing in the restaurant. Tables in the wine bar at the front are first come first served, and it gets pretty busy with just the kinda crowd you’d expect from somewhere of this stock.

BarChick’s usually people-watching in one of the window booths or hanging up at the bar, chatting wine with the friendly sommeliers.  But the small tables next to the open fires are where you wanna be when Mr Frost comes knocking.  Nothing warms you up like a wicked glass of wine, and they’ve got bottles from underrated countries like Greece and Croatia and hard to find vintages that’ll keep even the most adventurous wine snob happy.  Pair that up with some fat olives, bread and oysters and you won’t be leaving anytime soon.  Unless of course it’s to navigate the rickety old spiral staircase to the loos (not easy after a few glasses) or to head through the curtain and into the restaurant where dishes like brown butter-glazed Jerusalem artichoke are being cooked up by Michelin Starred chefs. BarChick’s in love.
