The Melrose Umbrella Company

BARCHICK SAYS

Inspired by James Melrose, this guy was pals with the Queen of England back in the day and carried around an umbrella instead of a cane. Dude got style and so does this joint. The Melrose Umbrella Company is a post-Prohibition themed bar that celebrates the end of the nation's dry days with a ton of antique umbrellas - when it rains it pours, at least the booze does.

They do cocktails and they do them well with a list devised by the likes of Julian Cox, Josh Goldman and Paul Sanguinetti. They’ve even got a handful on draft. We liked the Romance Without Pressure, a gin and cucumber number described as a 'PG make out with your best friend,’ and the rum-based Soda Jerk, topped with Bundaberg Ginger Beer. If you like them sweet and girly then go for The Pretty Woman, with strawberries and bubbles and all things nice.

The style is upscale hipster with a jazz soundtrack to match - where the cool kids go with a bit of class, though there’s quirky touches in the apothecary drawers lining the back of the bar, subway tiles and the occasional stuffed goose. NB. Tables get booked up fast.
