BARCHICK SAYS

A friendly doorman in NYC is a pretty good start; but alongside chilled-out bartenders, an impressive wine list and a great vibe, this place is pretty dope all round.

With black and white photographs around the bar, wonky wooden floors and paintings on the walls, Von feels like a tavern in a Gothic fairy tale. It’s a good place to work through some wine with 30+ by the glass, but we’d rather get stuck into their Tequila Gimlet. With fresh cucumber, simply syrup and tequila, it’s light, refreshing and starts your night off all civilised before you go get down and dirty in the cellar.

Downstairs is the real New York mini club/dishevelled den with free entry. If it’s nice chats and cocktails you want, stay upstairs, but if you’re after a sweaty night of dancing to hip hop then get on down here. The corked ceiling is pretty cool - Charles von Herrlich, the owner (also a painter/sculptor), proudly told us this was his very own 90,000-strong personal cork collection – that’s our kinda man. We actually counted 89,999 but that's tequila for you.
