Devassa Armazem

BARCHICK SAYS

Started in 2002, this network of bars was named after the beer Devassa that was created in Rio de Janeiro state. Most nights punters get stuck into happy hour and spill out onto the alfresco seating and tables outside, creating some kind of buzz around the place. Inside the décor is laid back with TV screens playing Brazilian sports and the restored wood seating is filled with Brazilian families tucking into large portions of food. The food is a bit all over the place, there’s a lot of choice but not a lot of substance. Play it safe with the calamari or a chicken sandwich. More importantly drinks! Well the list is extensive, with lots of takes on the Caipirinha and Mojito.

BarChick ordered a Caipirante with banana, strawberry, sugar, cinnamon, smashed ice and a shot of your favourite distilled alcohol. What it lacked in deliciousness it made up for in strength, perhaps just a double shot of Cachaca will do next time. Looking around everyone else was drinking beer not cocktails, we now know why. This is the place to come and sample the extensive beer range all baptized with female adjectives. Choose from Loura (blonde), Negra (black), Ruiva (redhead), India (India), Sarará and Zahara (like the desert). With a license from 6am till 4am (22 hours), it’s a good all-rounder.
