The Drake Hotel

BARCHICK SAYS

We’re not sure which happened first. The Drake reopened and we all wanted to drink in West Queen West, or the other way round. Yes it’s a bit smug and trendy, but sometimes that's exactly what the doctor orders.

If you’re into your up-and-coming indie bands then head downstairs to the Underground, a gig space, which hosts some of the city's best acts. Then there's the ground floor lounge which is, well, grounded, with space to hang out, read the paper, interesting art pieces to contemplate all with a rugged chic vibe.

But if you’re a high-flyer head upstairs to the posers paradise the Sky Yard. It’s certainly the coolest spot in the hotel with its Tacos and Tequila Shack and a fire pit around which the smokers congregate - you can even roast a marshmallow or two. The windows put you on show for those waiting at the bar, that is, if the retro cartoons playing on screens don’t distract them.

Our only complaint is they charge for entry on the weekends, which makes us stamp our feet for our right to drink. But if you’re going to a gig in the Underground then you can sneak into the rest of the establishment. Shh, you didn't hear that from us.
