The Ivy is back. Eggs and soldiers have become cool again. Prosecco ice cream is here. Balls are getting even bigger. And there's a free beer and pizza party, f*ck yeah! These are the most pimped up plates in the city this month and you should probably try them all.
Gettin' dippy with it
Some people would say a poached egg bar in a vintage shop (where the eggs are slow cooked for an HOUR at exactly 63 degrees) is a bit of a mad idea, but this new place is in Dalston - no one there's gonna bat an eyelid. Foxcroft & Ginger are bringing their award-winning artisan baking East this month with awesome egg dishes, cooking them 'sous-vide' - that's vacuum packed and boiled to us - and serving 'em up with sides of herb roasted mushrooms, caramelised cheese sauce (!!!) and truffle oil. Imagine that on a hangover. Shop, eat and get your weekend caffeine fix here.
Opens 18th June // Beyond Retro, 92-100 Stoke Newington Road, London, N16 7XB
Clear the 1st July in your diaries for some midweek meat! First there was pizza, then fried chicken, hot dogs, burgers, lobster burgers, and this month London will finally welcome it’s first meatball restaurant. This epic new place in Soho (where else?) is the brainchild of one of the coolest chicks in the business Bonny Porter, Australian Masterchef finalist and big fan of the giant meaty stuff. The bold menu will pimp up the traditional meal, including dishes like wagyu beef and confit salmon meatballs served up in big copper pans alongside killer jugs of sangria. There’s even a veggie option - fair play, Porter.
Opens 1st July // 58 Greek Street, W1D 3DY
A pop up restaurant in Notting Hill is opening this month and it serves everything with egg. We’re not yolking. The chefs behind the menu will be seriously showing oeuf with dishes like pork belly, sausage, egg and siracha mayo bap. Best start hatching plans to head west for some eggstremely cracking grub.
Notting Hill, London W11
Prosecco ice cream!
We didn't think this place could get any better after introducing us to Crunchy Corn Flake ice-cream (yeah, baby!) but now they're serving boozy gelato too! Go try the new home-made flavours at the ice cream 'bar' including Prosecco, Negroni and Aperol Spritz - it's fully licensed, so better get a glass of wine or beer while you're at it.
24 Jerdan Place, SW6 1BH
Pasta and wine for a tenner
What started out as a supper club in a New Cross back garden has turned into a banging Italian food pop up in Peckham serving up awesome pizza feasts, barbecued meats and some seriously friendly communal dining vibes. In June things get even meatier with the boys cooking ‘Rump Cap’ from The Ginger Pig and if you stop by between 9.30-11pm any (wine) Wednesday, a tenner will buy you a big bowl of pasta and a glass of wine. Date night or mate night this is a winner.
133 Copeland Road, SE15 3SN
Freaky eggs and soldiers
The Check On boys make traditional British grub look sexy and new, and this month they’re plating up from a trendy east London pub. Go say hi to chefs George Craig and Michelin-trained Terry Edwards and order their banging black pudding with duck egg and brown sauce, then for dessert it’s got to be the famous ‘Eggs and Soldiers’; vanilla cream with mango and shortbread. Confusing? Sure. F*cking delicious? Definitely.
From 4th June // 76 Broadway Market, E8 4QJ
It's back, with a sick new menu to boot
The legendary supermodels and rock stars hangout will reopen its doors after a 5 month refurb just in time to celebrate The Ivy’s 100th anniversary. Don’t worry, they've kept the stained glass windows, and it’s still as badass fancy as ever - so luxe even the food has pearls (cucumber pearls, to go with the yellowtail tuna sashimi. Obvs). You’ve got to give the brand new menu a go, it’s been created by Executive Chef Gary Lee and there’s an entire section dedicated to potatoes. Banging.
Open from 1st June // 1- 5 West Street, WC2H 9NQ
300 bottles of wine. And a Pig Board.
These guys won Best Roast in Great Britain with The Truscott Arms so you'd better get excited about their new joint opening at the end of June. Owners Andrew and Mary Jane Fishwick have gastro on lockdown and you'll be spoilt for choice with 300 bottles of wine and a killer menu created by former Dinner (Heston's restaurant) chef Aiden McGee. Try the Truscott beef chips, because chips aren't chips without some beef fat, but save room for the meat party that is their ‘Pig Board’. It’s £8 and has a f*ck load of pork crackers. Oink.
Opens end June // 240 Haverstick Hill, NW3 2AE
BYOB picnics and lobster sliders
Climb through the jungle above The Clapham North pub and follow the smell of duck burgers and spiced lamb shoulder until you reach Jimmy’s Secret Garden. This place has been transformed into a vibrant secret space serving up cocktails and picnics, potato and truffle salad and lobster sliders. Bring your own booze and join the BBQ Club where, every Wednesday, you can cook your own 4 course meal on a mini BBQ at your table. That’s one way to impress on a date.
25th April - 31st August // 409 Clapham Road, SW9 9BT
