What is Propercorn?
PROPERCORN is popcorn done properly. We make delicious popcorn that’s also healthy; but actually we extend beyond that. We mentor small businesses, make clothes, collaborate with young, creative talent and also place a huge amount of emphasis on enjoying what you do.
How long have you been doing what you do?
I first had the idea about 5 years ago but we launched at the end of 2011.
When did you have your eureka moment?
I have always wanted to run my own business and had many ideas before this, but PROPERCORN was the one that I felt most passionate about. The challenge was to create a snack that was both genuinely satisfying but also good for you. I quit my job when my mum reminded me that the last present my dad had bought me was a vintage popcorn machine – it felt like a good sign.
What would you be doing if you weren’t running Propercorn?
Running another business, though I do love to paint.
Big up someone that you’ve met along the way?
Big up Prince – yet to meet him, but I figure if I keep doing enough shout outs to him, it will happen.
Advice for other people looking to start their own thing?
An idea is only 10%, the success lies in the execution.
If you had a super power what would it be?
In Greek mythology, Cassandra was a Trojan princess. She was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo, but when she spurned his advances he cursed her so nobody would believe her prophecies – so maybe to realise my namesake but without the end bit.
What’s been your biggest achievement?
Yet to come, fingers crossed.
Who would play you in a movie?
No idea but I could provide the popcorn
Tell us something amazing about the Snack/food industry?
Never have there been more start-ups entering the food and drink category, the landscape is incredibly diverse and more exciting than ever before. The barriers to entry are much lower, so there is a real hub of activity in the UK. I am feeling inspired and looking forward to seeing what we have on offer as customers over the next year.
Do you have any quirky / OCD rituals?
My wardrobe is arranged by style and colour order and I find folding clothes really therapeutic. I don’t kill small animals though, so don’t panic.
Other brands you respect?
Headspace has real integrity at the heart of the business, I am continually amazed by the aesthetic of Cereal and I love everything about Korres.
Worst day at Propercorn?
When one of the flavours was packed into the wrong packaging – we produce over 2million packs a month so you can imagine the scale of the problem!
Best day/achievement at Propercorn?
An incredible team and culture here allows us to use what is such an exciting business, as the perfect vehicle to realise our own personal ambitions. We are growing quickly though, so maintaining this is what keeps me up at night; it’s a wonderful challenge to have though.
