Meet The Maker: Seedlip Ben

What is Seedlip?

Seedlip is the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit best served long with tonic or short with brine in a booze free Martini.

How long have you been doing what you do?

Two years in November.

When did you have your eureka moment?

November 2013, whilst living in the woods researching medieval herb gardens and old herbals I came across John French’s epic work The Art of Distillation published in 1651.

[An online copy I hasten to add - King George III’s original 1st edition sits proudly in the rare books section of the british library!]

It details distilled non-alcoholic remedies….

The war on sugar had begun, I was sick of fizzy, kiddy, fruity drinks when out and had been working on other people’s brands for a decade so I bought a three litre still, raided the garden and Seedlip slowly began taking over my kitchen!

Why did you set it up?

Aside of the need for a sophisticated alternative to alcohol, my family have been farming in Lincolnshire since the 1700’s and my fondest, fairly cliched memories are the smell of fresh pea fields and riding in the combine. I don’t want to be a farmer but I’ve always wanted to find some way to combine everything I love and continue my family’s legacy of working with nature and the land. The dream with Seedlip is to build a distillery on the farm where we used to sow seed from baskets called Seedlips 300 years ago.

What would you be doing if you weren’t running Seedlip?

Probably helping other people with their brands.

Big up someone that you’ve met along the way?

There are 55 people at least whose unwavering belief in Seedlip over the last two years is why I’m answering this question. Thank you.

Advice for other people looking to start their own thing?

Make enough sleep your number one priority, it makes everything else a bit easier!

If you had a super power what would it be?

Be in two places at once.

What’s been your biggest achievement?

Our first order from Selfridges last week was pretty special!

Who would play you in a movie?

Richard Dreyfuss in his Jaws days.

Tell us something amazing about the drink industry?

It’s small, generous and fearless.

Do you have any quirky / OCD rituals?

I wear odd socks.
