Wanna know how to throw an epic party? What tunes to get people dancing? The best places to party in the world? Ask a DJ. We got chatting to one of the best in the biz, Charles Prince, got drinking our fave new vodka - Sauvelle, and got this party started.
FIRST UP, WHAT DO YOU DO?
MUSIC! I consume it, I play it, I make it... Regardless of what, how, when or who
I've been DJing since I was 15 and I can't imagine doing anything else than working with music.
BEST PART OF YOUR JOB:
It may sound cheesy, but seeing people having a great time and knowing I'm contributing to that happiness. I love seeing people let go of their inhibitions. It's the reason I love the night. It's the one time people can be who they want to be.
FAVOURITE BARS IN THE WORLD AND WHY:
Trailer Happiness: it's a crazy bar on portobello road. The barmen used to literally set the ceiling on fire. Think fire & safety put a stop to that, but the vibe is still as insane.
Dick & Janes: an über cool bar in my favourite park of Brooklyn - Fort Green.
On one of my last trips to Japan, a friend took me to this tiny bar in Tokyo, I don't even think it had a name. There was a piano and a customer randomly started playing on it. Another guy pulled out a trumpet and joined him. It's the kind of quirky stuff you only see in Japan
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE AS A KID?
Superman! I used to put on a cape and jump from the highest point I could reach. The closest I got from flying cost me my 2 front teeth
WHO WOULD PLAY YOU IN A MOVIE?
Idriss Elba. I love his quiet confidence. A gentleman and a gangster. He's also a really good DJ.
FAVOURITE PLACE TO PARTY IN THE WORLD?
I've done insane parties all over the world. The craziest one has got to be a birthday party for an A-list actor at the foot of the pyramids in Ginza. But if I had to pick a place to party it'd probably be London actually.
HOW DO YOU THROW A ROCKING PARTY?
It's the right sum of multiple parts: the right drink, beautiful people and great music.
TOP MUST-HAVE TUNES ON A PARTY PLAYLIST:
Hypnotize by Biggie, 99 problems by Jay-Z, Mr Bright Side by the Killers, Warp by bloody beetroots and anything Prince.
WHAT OTHER DJS GETS YOU DANCING?
I'm a big fan of DJs and DJ culture in general. DJ jazzy Jeff is the best I've ever heard. Mark Ronson is mostly known for his production work but he's also an amazing DJ. (I've been lucky enough to play with them and they're just incredible.)
Also in my top 5 are DJ Mehdi and DJ Swing who were close friends and mentors but sadly are no longer around. And you can't forget DJ AM of course. In my current top 5 I'd put A-Trak, Craze, Ruckus, MOS and Solomun
IT’S NEW YEAR'S EVE - WHERE SHALL WE PARTY?
Well hopefully not a club. I hate DJing at New Year's Eve. It just feels like Last Chance Cafe with people forcing themselves to have fun but it's never quite there.
The most fun night to party is Halloween!
