What's In Store For 2014

2013, the year BarChick reached over 20million people. There was the app and there was Miley Cyrus, JJ Goodman and his London Cocktail Club bar group turned into an empire, prosecco on tap became a (great) thing, Tanqueray brought back malacca (kinda), Ryan Cheti opened a bar without ice and hired one of London’s fittest bar-gals, London got a Shake Shack, a Balthazar AND a Five Guys, and some Irish guys opened the best bar in NYC. Dan Aykroyd sang on the opening night of NOLA and the place hasn’t stopped rocking since, hotel bars became cool again thanks to The ACE and The Edition, and The Artesian aged a cocktail in… leather… wooof!

Phew, big year, but there are already signs that 2014 is looking to be even bigger and better, here’s what’s in store:

Getting High

Suddenly London has bars up high, lots of them and they’re great. Don’t expect this to stop in the New Year, with the following bars already in the works, and no doubt more to come.

Gong at The Shard

'Another bar at the Shard?!” Hell dizzle! Remember, The Shangri La Hotel hasn’t even opened up there yet, and it will take up 18 of the top floors! Gong will be their bar, so your first date/anniversary/special occasion destination is officially sorted.

52nd Floor, The Shard, 96 Tooley Street, London, SE1 // Opening date: February 2014

City Social

We’re not sure how Jason Atherton finds the time to open so many restaurants (Pollen St Social, Little Social, Social Eating House, Berners Tavern), but he’s hard at work to open something a little ‘higher end’ than the others. City Social will be perched up on top of Tower 42, with gorgeous views that will no doubt match the food.

Tower 42, Old Broad Street, London, EC2N 1HQ // Opening date: May 2014

Hot Pubs

Last month Russell Norman turned a grim Covent Garden pub into the Ape & Bird, a multi storey gastro pub, he gave Central London somewhere that it badly needed, and brought hot pubs back into the limelight. Come 2014 three more pubs are set to open that will continue to lift the game.

Duck & Rice

A Chinese-style pub by Alan Yau (Hakkasan, Yauatcha), in the old Endurance pub. What could be better than Asian street food and Chinese cocktails! Yes Alan.

90 Berwick Street, London, W1F 0QB // Opening date: early 2014

Already getting major cred for their King’s Road pop-up, we can’t wait for Korobuta’s Japanese pub (aka izakaya) to open up by Marble Arch. Seriously.can.not.wait.

17-20 Kendal Street, London, W2 2AW // Opening date: early 2014

World's End Market

The World’s End Pub gets a makeover and will serve seasonal produce and fresh fish, interesting.

495 King’s Road, London, SW10 // Opening date: March 2014

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it… open another! There’s nothing better than your favourite hangout doing so well that they open a second venue, and 2014 sees some of our favourite venues getting busy and opening up second, third and even fourth locations. Good news!

Barrafina Covent Garden

There’s been whispers of a new Barrafina location for what seems like years, and now we have confirmation that everybody’s favourite tapas restaurant will be opening up venue number two! This time with a private party room in addition to the wrap-around dining bar.

10 Adelaide St, Covent Garden, London, WC2N 4HZ // Opening date: spring 2014

Villiers Coffee Company

So the folks who own legendary, underground wine bar Gordon’s have two lovely daughters, who are opening an all day, aboveground eatery up the street. Who knew?!

31a Villiers Street, London, WC2N 6ND // Opening Date: February 2014

Tommi's Burger Joint Kings Cross

Icelandic burgers rock! If the rate at which hip burger chain Tommi’s is opening shops is anything to go by...

Kings Cross

London Cocktail Club Shoreditch

JJ Goodman opens another bar, it will rock. Nuff said.

Near Box Park // Opening date: 2014

The Fable

Another Drake & Morgan mega venue, with three floors of pretty designs, low-cal drinks and bankers in suits. We like.

52 Holborn Viaduct, London, EC1A 2FD // Opening Date: February 2014

All Star Casts

London’s rock star barmen used to be content just winning a cocktail comp or two, now they’re opening bars, either with their name above the door (Like Ryan Cheti’s White Lyan) or consulting, along with a team of other naughty barmen. Finally people are realising that it’s the guys and gals behind the stick that actually know how to do this stuff well.

Tony Conigliaro is no stranger to running his own establishment, but 2014 will see him open a new joint, this time with a menu inspired by worldly locations, and another hot (literally) barman, Mr Nico de Soto as partner.

Location TBC // Opening date: 2014

Big Easy Covent Garden

Southern food, bourbon and good tunes, we’ve been fans of the existing Big Easy for years (and regular entrants in their rib eating contests!), but with some of BarChick’s favourite barmen working on the opening of the new Covent Garden venue, and Nathan Merriman staying on to manage the place, we’re at the front of our saddles waiting for this one!

12 Maiden Lane, London, WC2E 7NA ‎// Opening date: February 2014

Hip Hotels

Nobu Hotel

Just in case all that killer sushi makes you sleepy.

10 – 50 Willow Street, London, EC2 // Opening date: 2014

Beaumont Hotel

Corbin & King do hotels, this can only be good.

8 Balderton Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 6TF // Opening date: early 2014

The Mondrian

Remember that mega black & white photo of the Queen and co, draped over the side of a building along The Thames, yeah that’s the Mondrian under there! South Beach vibes come to London, hell yeah!

20 Upper Ground, Southwark, London, SE1 9PF // Opening date: early 2014

Andre Balzas' New Hotel

This guy created The Standard in New York, you know… the one where the maids and bellboys were asked to fake doing it up against the windows to get in the paper… also it’s got the Boom Boom Room up on the top floor. This sh*t is cool!

Chiltern Street, Marylebone, London, W1U 7PU // Opening date: 2014
