Funky Fusion at its best brings Tokyo dreams to the Soho streets

If you’ve ever been to Tokyo, you might recognise Golden Gai as the infamous area in Shinjuku packed with neon-lit bars and pulsing clubs. It’s a place to get raucous & run a little wild. It’s nightlife, but turned up a notch.

In our opinion, Soho & Shinjuku aren’t a million miles away from each other. Golden Gai was known for prostitution before 1958, before became illegal, while Soho’s had its fair history of brothels & back street sauciness. They both consist of a maze of interconnected alleyways packed full of fun. And they’re both the perfect spot for when you wanna get a cocktail or three.

Now a little slice of Japan has landed in Soho via… Italy?? Yep, the team behind Golden Gai (who also created cult Dalston restaurant Angelina) have chucked Verona into the mix. The result is a menu of unique, punchy & creative cocktails that mix sake with grappa, or showcase ingredients such as black garlic honey, lapsang souchong, Franciacorta and Cinzano. Not sure exactly what the hell some of those things are? The staff are super clued-up and will help you navigate the menu like a pro.

Go fully Italian Job with the Negroni Al Fresco, or get a taste of Tokyo with the Shinjuku Affumicato, mixing Asahi, sesame and Toki whisky. Want something to soak up the booze? Try a piadine. They’re Italian flatbreads, only at Golden Gai they’re stuffed with Asian-inspired ingredients. And while the food & drinks might be a delightful mash up, the decor is on the sleek, sexy and stylish side for Soho. When in doubt, go for Golden Gai.
