Bei Schlawinchen

BARCHICK SAYS

From the outside this iconic dive bar looks more like a circus than a drinking hole, colourful fairground lights present the entrance and the theme is continued inside. A freak show of antique paraphernalia looms from any attachable surface including the ceiling, walls and bar. There’s shop window mannequins, a rocking horse, a gramophone, model ships, a creepy painting of two babies drinking beer and even a motorcycle… it’s a wonder there’s any room for punters.

The crowd here can be likened to that of a working man’s club (or ‘kneipe’) plus a few misunderstood artists, man. This place is nearly always busy, owing mainly to the high unemployment in the area plus one of those lovely 24 hour licences. This place opened in 1979 and has barely paused since.

Drink beer here and lots of it.
