Schwarzsaur

BARCHICK SAYS

Burly, smoky and sehr German, if you want to sample a traditional Berlin booze-up then look no further. This place has a reputation for being the busiest bar on Kastanianallee and was one of the first bars to open after the war, many of the original customers still swing by for a coffee in the morning, now that’s commitment.

Push your way past the heavy, red velvet curtain and blink your way through a veil of smoke to make your entrance. A combination of crusty old men who look like they’ve not left since the war and young scenesters heckle for space at the horseshoe-shaped bar here, it’s quite a sight. The tiled interior has remained the same since day one and there’s little demand for change.

Don’t even think about ordering a cocktail here, you’d be openly mocked and forced to leave. Instead stick to one of the beers they have on draught or a glass of wine served from a dusty bottle into a cloudy glass. You don’t really come here for the food or the quality of the booze, but more for a taste of the past… and it’s got a 24 hour licence, guten morgan.
