Madame Chu

BARCHICK SAYS

It feels like an oriental den of inequity, from the days of Old Shanghai when life was exotic and dangerous. You half expect there to be a dude in the corner smoking opium (gutted).

Past the black curtain, the black-walled bar is covered in Chinese statues, masks and lanterns, giving it a deep red glow that encourages bad behaviour in the corners, which is exactly what former owner and general mad man Paul Muldowney wanted it to do. Such was its success he sold it within a year, but they’re running it the way he would have wanted. The bar team are downright awesome and loads of fun, and better yet, they pour a strong drink. Get yourself anything from a Happy Ending (bourbon, rhubarb, mint, absinthe) to some Extreme Prejudice (rum, raspberry, basil, pepper).

Located on Gammel Strand next to a whole bunch of other smashing cocktail bars, if you’re on a bar hop this is where you want to get stuck.
