BARCHICK SAYS

‘Speakeasy’ has become a bit of a buzzword in the bar world. No sign? Shadowy corners? Not plotted on Google maps? It’s a Speakeasy, people! Funnily enough though, most of them use gimmicks to try get you nestled in their Art Deco banquettes.

Not so much bar 001. These guys are legit low key. Yeah, you might miss the door if you don’t know it’s there (look for the black door tucked behind the market stalls on Graham Street). It’s worth seeking it out for the drinks, though. They’re seriously good. BarChick sipped one of her best Old Fashioneds in the city, sitting pretty in one of the squishy armchairs.

Whether or not you find libraries the sexiest of spots to canoodle (hey, no judgement), 001 makes a killer date spot. The ambience is all 1920s member’s club meets country-house library. Find a secluded booth and recreate your fave vintage movie moments to the smooth jazz playing on the speakers. For extra seduction, show your bourbon knowledge by ordering the exclusive Pappy van Winkle.
