This bar has a long history as the home of British Chess, but the only move you need to decide on is whether to settle into one of the plush armchairs or take your throne on a velvet chesterfield. Oh, and the small issue of the check, mate.

You’ll find BarChick reigning supreme on one of the pillow-plumped sofas, in view of the leather chequerboard bar. The name of the game is killer cocktails, and British seasonal ingredients are king. They’re being mixed up by Geordie-boy head bartender Harry Bereton and his dream team, who are as charming as they are knowledgeable. The Knight’s Bar new oceanic spin on this classic takes dry vermouth infused with leftover oyster shells from the restaurant below, and mixes it with Black cow vodka and Manzilla sherry. They say oysters are an aphrodisiac - after a couple of these you’ll see why. 

In the mood for food? The epic dishes served downstairs have been given a bar-friendly twist, and the signature Yorkie Sandwich is major. They take 28-day aged roasted rib of beef smothered with English mustard and wedge it in a Yorkshire pudding. As freaking awesome as it sounds.
