From the same peeps as the illustrious Sandinista bar/restaurant in Leeds and Manchester, Smokestack - hidden away on Lower Briggate, parallel to the infamous Call Lane -offers its take on a traditional New York style boozer.
The inside is dressed up with exposed brickwork and moody lighting, but it’s not just the look of the place that gives Smokestack its effortless cool. The upstairs bar, The Roost, turns into a bouncing sweat box over the weekend and plays host to regular DJ appearances from the likes of DJ Chico Malo and other local funk & soul heavyweights. The cocktails are serious, the staff charming and highly trained, and the back bar impressive. No stress here my friend.
BarChick reckons this place is equally suitable for an early evening, dimly lit, romantic rendezvous, or a messy Friday night of boozing hard with your chums. They stock over 15 different beers and ciders alongside an intriguing and eclectic selection of cocktails for around £7. Want something interesting? Try the White Truffle Lactart. Something fruity? The Raspberry Phosphate. And for something stiff, the 1840 Sazerac. The bar is also available for private hire.
