BARCHICK SAYS

Coffee bar meets cocktail hangout in Covent Garden

There are some things the Aussies do very well. Catchy soap-opera theme tunes. Pint-sized pop stars. And coffee. No prizes for guessing that the way BarChick likes her coffee is in a cocktail; nothing beats an Espresso Martini to perk up the evening. So next time we're flagging we'll be making a beeline for Abuelo Cafe. This little Aussie spot in Covent Garden takes its beans very seriously.  Earthy tones, natural materials and handwoven fabrics makes it feel like you've just stepped into a cosy beach cafe.

Abuelo serves brunch from 8am, an all-day menu with dishes such as BBQ Croque-Monsieur and coconut chicken salad, and then ramps things up in the evenings. From 5pm the chilled cafe turns into a funky little nook for hanging with your homies. They've got an Espresso Martini and a Spiked Iced Coffee, as you'd expect. More unusual offerings include a Turbo Gin and Tonic (essentially a G&T with an espresso hit), and the Dulce de Leche. Argentinian caramel, rum and espresso tastes as damn good as it sounds. Getting the shakes? No worries, they've got non-caffeinated cocktails for when you start bouncing off the walls.
