BARCHICK SAYS

There's something quite old-school glamour about waiting for a train, drinking a martini. We think so, anyway. Now anyone who finds themselves in the chaos of King's Cross can seek refuge in ultra-slick martini lounge, Anthracite.

While the name might not roll off the tongue, bear with 'cos there's a reason for it. It's the word for the purest form of coal - big business round this way during the Industrial Revolution, especially when it comes to the history of the Great Northern Hotel. Inside it's dark, mysterious, and exactly the kind of place you'd like to come for some naughtiness or a heart to heart with your bessie under cover of Art -Deco cool. We loved the charcoal sketches adorning the coal-black walls, the gorgeous period light fixtures, and the marble fireplaces. With three intimate rooms boasting gleaming metallic fittings and electric blue trim, there's no doubt this is one super sexy spot.

Martinis are the name of the game, which is always music to our ears. Choose a gin or vodka base from the artisan spirits they've listed, or dive in with a contemporary martini cocktail. Icons like the Breakfast, Espresso and Vesper all appear, or go off-piste with an Offbeat Martini. It's got notes of dark chocolate, almond and coconut perfume alongside freeze-dried raspberries. Far out. Tuck yourself into one of the velvet armchairs at one of the little round tables, order by candlelight, and get that clandestine catch-up started.
