Hidden below the schnitzel heaven that is Boopshi’s, you’ll find Bernhard’s Bar, London’s version of Vienna’s famous American Bar. Badass Brother combo Ed and Ben are homely types; the food recipes are from their grandfather Opa's cookbook and the drinks are inspired by their great grandpa, Bernhard… what a dude.
It’s a bar that cries out for a session, especially if you hit it during Spritz O’clock; 5.30 – 7pm weekdays, which renders Spritzs only six quid. The lighting is dim and sexy (hello Tindr date), the booths are intimate and private without losing the buzz of the bar, the music’s good and there’s prosecco on tap. Genius.
The Spritzs are where it’s at (you’re in Vienna after all), and they’re a very good place to start. Numbered 1 – 8, take your pick based on your flavour / booze preference. Big up the #8 with Stroh 160 Proof, Fanta, sherbet (homemade, always) and prosecco, you’re limited to two per person, and if you sniff the imported Stroh you’ll understand why.
Not into Spritzs? Bernhard was pretty dab hand when it came to a shaker, the Kirsch Reviver and the Sloe Gin Figz were both impressive.
You won’t want to leave so you’d better eat; schnitzels (add a duck egg) or wursts in buns and finish up with some warm apple pie. Bernhard, you had us at homemade sherbet.
