Bull in a China Shop

BARCHICK SAYS

The Chan brothers have been in the Shoreditch game for a while, first they opened Chinese dim sum parlour The Drunken Monkey and their baby bro has a similar Far Eastern flex. Tucked under the railway arch on Shoreditch high street this spot was once a pole dancing joint but now is bringing good old Shoreditch drinking back in style with a mega Japanese whisky selection and ‘healthy’ (sure) Chinese food.

It’s jammed full of oriental curiosities, medicine bottles, bone china ornaments, Tom Dixon lights and a sweet copper bar to catch your reflection on. The real deal-breaker is the Japanese Whisky and a bartender that's trained to carved ice cubes just like the Japanese masters. You gotta see it to believe it. Make your way through bottles of Nikka, Hibiki, Yamasaki, Jura and Dalmore with some rare bottles for those with credit cards and curiosity.

Their eight house cocktails hit all the spots but it’s all about their Charcoal Old Fashioned made with Hakashu single malt distillers reserve, chamomile syrup, coconut charcoal and bitters – yeah, it’s banging. Hungry? It's also an all- day restaurant with food worth travelling for; check the charcoal chicken burger with local Liverpool Street Chicken Shop chicken and a charcoal bun made by the dusty knuckle Bakery in Dalston.  Rumour has it that charcoal does good sh*t that even your daily green juice can’t do.  Shoreditch is back in the game.
