As soon as you walk through the tiny green door of Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels you’re a shade classier. Freshly imported from Paris, it’s bought to you by those big shot boozers behind Experimental Cocktail Club, only this time they’ve swapped their cocktail shakers for good ol’ fashioned vino instead.
This is the little sister of the Parisian original on rue Lobineau, and they’ve pretty much recreated one of our favourite wine bars of the French capital in all its glory. Think classic brasserie chic, with a bit of retro elegance thrown in: dark wood panelled walls painted deep green and blue, plush Ottomans around glass coffee tables and vintage mirrors.
The epic wine list is curated by the sommelier extraordinaire of the Experimental group, with many bottles from lesser-known independent producers. The list changes from a selection of hundreds, so if you want to get your geek on about the grape, then this is the place to do it. Though if you’re looking for a white we highly recommend the Chablis, Domaine Garnier 2013. Oh yes.
The food is just as quality; Scallops with Cream of Jerusalem Artichoke and Black truffle Burrate? Yes please. While you’re at it The Posh Madam (a Croque Madame to you and me) with Truffle Ham and Quail’s Egg is off the chain.
