Joshua's Tavern

BARCHICK SAYS

We thought London didn't need another gin bar, but unlike our PM, we're happy to admit when we're wrong.

This posh-pub-meets-laid-back bar on the ground floor of Leicester Square's swankiest hotel is rocking a menu of globally produced gins that'll have even the most seasoned gin drinker raising their eyebrows.

The gin & tonic combos are basically endless, and there are a few vintage gins dating back to the 50s if you feel like splashing the cash, but we say hit the terroir-led Gintonicas for a taste of what these gin-pros do best. Each Gintonica has undergone a careful five-stage pairing process to harmonise and elevate the flavours. We tried most of them, but it was the gold leaf topped Sipsmith London Dry Gintonica mixed with Mancino Bianco infused with citrus oils, cassia bark and rosemary, herbal honey and rosemary bitter blend, topped with Fever-Tree Mediterranean tonic that we say shouldn't be missed.

There's no shortage of copper in this joint. The entire bar glows with the stuff, and even the draft beer is stored in shining bronze tanks strapped to the ceiling. You'll find us perched on one of the stools by the wall-length window which opens out onto Leicester Square for that indoor/outdoor drinking vibe, shimmying our shoulders to the live music soundtrack here Thursdays through to Saturdays. If you see punters taking their time in the loos, it probably isn't what you think it is. The lav seats here are heated (a luxury we didn't know we needed) and if you can work out the right buttons to push, there's a wash and blow-dry up for grabs for your privates. Expect more eyebrow-raising and definitely a few wry smiles.
