Meat People

BARCHICK SAYS

There are non-meat people and there are meat people, and we fall proudly into the latter category. We want our meat so rare it’s still mooing when we eat it. If you can sort that out, and throw some awesome cocktails into the mix, then we’re all yours. Meet Meat People, a neighbourhood steak house and cocktail bar on Essex Road, who had us at ox heart burger.

The vibe here is 1950s retro diner meets Art Deco brasserie - cosy yellow leather banquettes, steel-framed windows, tiled ceiling and a classy, jazzy soundtrack. It used to be called Alfredo’s back in the day, and featured in cult classic Quadrophenia, which already gives it bonus points.

This is the kinda place you could rock up on a Tuesday night, take a seat at the 1930s refurbished bar and happily wile away a few hours chatting to the awesome staff while knocking back their neat list of cocktails. Ian is the man to sort out all of your booze needs and desires, with all his favourite classics and some tasty concoctions of his own.

You’re welcome to just drink, but you’d be a fool. They have zebra on the menu – need we say more? Chef Nicolas Buyo is Argentine, and the steak took BarChick right back to her beefy times in Buenos Aires. For the meat fiends amongst you, order the Meat People Platter, a grand 600g of meaty goodness including rib eye, onglet and slow roasted Iberico pork shoulder. Order a bottle of Malbec to wash it down with and your next hour will be pure carnivorous joy. Sexy.
