BARCHICK SAYS

Bootlegger’s where you go to get your kicks in The City when you’re not ready to call it a night. You may run into a gaggle of PAs or suits chatting shop, but it’s all good vibes. Where else are you gonna find a place that’s open till 3am in the Financial District willing to provision you the way they did during Prohibition?

They’re sticking to the tried and tested speakeasy formula and they’ve nailed it. Look for the black door next to the dry cleaners and descend into what looks like a massive sauna packed with all that 20s paraphernalia we know and love: gramophone, vintage till and suitcases, newspaper clippings and a piano for crooners who are tinkering modern music with a Charleston twist. Mismatched tables and chairs are kept low and toward the fringes because it’s all super casual and you probs won’t be sitting for long anyway; they’re rocking one Motown and RnB banger after the other, so you’re gonna want to groove and the massive space in the middle of the room is for just that.

If you’ve got more than a few mates in tow, book into the corner room with a massive table, dinner candles and leather chairs. No min. spend, no fee, no fuss. Just how BarChick likes it. This place has work party all over it. You’re not gonna get a mind-blowing cocktail in a glass shoe, but the menu is straightforward and spot on with classics named after 20s phrases. Just flag down one of the bowtied bartenders for help. Rumour has it they’ve even got a late-night brioche hot dog menu in the works. Sold.
