Much as BarCock loves Clapham stalwart Kazbar, SW4 has been crying out for another gay bar to liven the scene up a bit for years. Now it has it, in small but perfectly-formed The Bridge. Tucked away - the clue's in the name kids - in an arch under the railway bridge over the High Street, The Bridge's side-street location makes it a great choice for locals wanting to avoid the increasingly horrible main strip. The long, low room is perfectly suited to its new purpose; white cladding, quirky wine glass chandeliers and leather cube stools make for a chic interior and DJ's create a buzzing atmosphere. It feels much more like the clubber-oriented bars of nearby Vauxhall than Clapham's hardcore drinking dens.
The Bridge's real strength is its drink list which is far better not only than many other gay bars but many other bars locally full stop; as well as a varied and reasonable (though not cheap) wine list, there's a good choice of cocktails for around the £6.50 mark and staff are quick and well-rehearsed at making them, so ordering them won't earn you the hatred of other punters made to wait ages for their order. Watch out when ordering spirits - staff do that naughty doubles-as-default thing which is fine for those on a mission, less so for those on a budget. With a tapas menu available into the early evening and a happy hour from 4-7, The Bridge is a great spot for any time of day; a cool, style-conscious (but refreshingly attitude-free) clientele have already claimed it as their own.
