The French is an institution, and if you haven’t been there yet, you should consider yourself a failure. The tiny Soho spot started out as a gin parlour, then got famous as the home of de Gaulle and the free French during the second world war.
Since then it’s been all about Francis Bacon, Dylan Thomas and a litany of boozy bohemians who made this place home. You get the point: this is somewhere you feel good about getting sauced because you’re hanging in a history lesson.
It’s quirky, to say the least. Try ordering a pint of something, or using your mobile phone in the bar and see what happens. For some reason there’s a tradition of drinking Breton Cidre in here, much to the detriment of our liver. They've also got a choice of thirty superb champagnes and wines by the glass so you won't get bored, that's for sure.
The perfect spot to launch a serious assault on the fleshpots of Soho, something’s always guaranteed to happen at the French.
