BARCHICK SAYS

The resurrected icon bringing the power back to Shoreditch

Old iconic buildings getting a fly new lease of life? Get it straight into our veins. The Light Bar in Shoreditch is a legend of East London's nightlife scene. This grand exposed brick building is the former Victorian ‘Great Eastern Light’ power station - the only remaining power station of its type in the UK, still rocking the original electrical engines suspended from the ceiling. After being out of action for the last decade, it's been resurrected by long-standing Hackney residents Morten Jensen and Darren Collins who are on a mission to bring the ‘original Shoreditch’ vibe back to the area. Spoiler alert: they've f*cking nailed it.

The epic two-storey high "Engine Hall" on the ground floor is a jaw-dropper of a dining room. With large communal tables for walk-ins and a sun-trap terrace to the side, there's plenty of space to enjoy the menu of kick-ass seasonally sustainable dishes (with ingredients plucked straight from the garden of chef Johnnie Collins) and the killer cocktails inspired by the infamous rave history of the 'hood. Co-owner Morten Jensen was himself a big part of the buildings rave history so it was only natural he have a next-level cocktail named after him. The Mississippi Mo Martini is up there with one of the best dirties we've tried, with Pickleback vibes from the addition of Glenmorangie and Rittenhouse rye alongside Portobello 171 Gin & a house-made pickle garnish.

Like views with your booze? Head to the first-floor mezzanine where you'll find the glow of the slick and intimate Copper Bar. Up here its all about the reimagining of cocktails from the past few centuries that have influenced the mixology of today, including their sharp straight-up remix of their Neat Paloma with its blurred history dating back to the 50's; and the Carpano Royale which elegantly and effortlessly celebrates sweet style vermouths with Ruinart Brut, a healthy amount of cacao bitters and a sugar cube. The perfect drinks to accompany an evening of people watching from up high.
