Toro Gordo

BARCHICK SAYS

In English it means fat bull, in Spanish it sounds much sexier, the location in Hammersmith is a little less so but Toro Gordo is takin things up a notch. Owner Miguel Caffarena (formerly of La Bodega Negra) has successfully brought authentic Spanish food to an area long in need of a revival, and let’s just say he knows his sh*t.

The interior is like some kind of throwback to Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and the loos were wallpapered by a team of Harajuku girls turned decorators (or so it seems). It’s quirky and it works, plus the dim lighting makes your date that little bit more attractive.

The food is simple and delicious with bold flavour and fresh ingredients. The Vieires Plancha (grilled scallops with house pesto, crispy blue potato chips and confit Iberico) is mega, and you’d be a fool to pay up without having tried the croquetas. Latino/Asian vibes reign the drinks list plus with a range of Spanish beers, wine and Cava it’s all going on. Hit the tequila and order a Mafo (tequila, sweet wine, Poire Williams, lemon and pear juice), or keep it simple with a Pepe Luis (rum, yuzu sugar, lime juice). If you want to kick back in true Spanish style with a glass of Sangria and a few pinchos then this is where it’s at.
