The infamous BAO team have decided on a little time-travel, and are whisking us straight back to 1930s Taipei. Get an F in Geography? It's the capital of Taiwan, baby. So expect delicate teas, kooky cocktails and intense Taiwanese flavours all served up in a space reminiscent of one of the luxury dining rooms you'd find in this East Asian city.
Smack bang in the middle of Soho and right next to the mad bustle of Chinatown, the two-floored space has got it all. A tea bar, a cocktail bar, a restaurant, and somewhere to play Mahjong (you know you want to). There’s also a private dining room if you’re celebrating with mates. Shaped by the cultural past of Taiwan, the menu is split into sections from bar snacks like 16 spice fried pig tails and cuttlefish toast, to more substantial and classic dishes like crab with chilli egg drop sauce and XU’s shou pa chicken. Street food also makes an appearance with things like the taro dumplings - not to be missed.
Sound good? Just wait til you check out the tea bar. It’s central to XU with loads of loose leaf teas from Taiwan that you can have in or buy for home - and here you’ll be shown what goes down at a Taiwanese tea ceremony. Naturally it's the cocktails that BarChick was concerned with though, and these also feature the finer leaves in life. Based on Taiwanese grown teas woven into classics, you might be sipping an Old Fashioned with Assam tea, or a G&T with Oolong. Forget being teetotal, we're going totally wild for tea.
