Upstairs at the ACE Hotel

BARCHICK SAYS

The new ACE Hotel in LA’s Downtown has taken residence in a 1920s golden oldie, formerly known at the United Artists Theatre, with the most spectacular views over downtown LA. Naturally, you want to get high in this baby, so head to the Upstairs cocktail lounge. Run by the L.A. Chapter team - the same people behind NYC’s awesome neighbourhood spot Five Leaves [LINK] - it has a laidback Moroccan garden style and great vibes.

Whether you hang poolside in the scorching sun or drop by for some late night drinks to take in the city lights below, this is definitely the spot. They have a nice back bar, from French aperitifs and British gins to American whiskeys, all blended with a mix of raw fruits, teas and spices. The cocktail list does some good low proof options for drivers, too. They even have PBR for all those cocktail-snubbing-hipster types on a budget. If you’re peckish then order a couple of veggie-focused plates, or head to the L.A. Chapter dining room inside.

DJs blast out good tunes late into the night, so our advice is to get in early to beat the queue and the doorman.
