One of the original Northern Quarter hangouts, Matt & Phreds is Manchester’s original live jazz joint. Famous for its live music which takes place six nights a week, the red neon entrance leads to a dimly-lit Prohibition style lair.

Rustic wooden tables are scattered in front of an old stage and the whole place is cosy and romantic. Lure a date here and then drown out any awkwardness with the sound of a band, perfect.

The atmosphere here depends on the night; jazz, folk, gypsy, swing and even ska goes down. BarChick has been known to dance on tables and lead the conga, but other nights can involve more schmoozing and less moving. Match the wicked selection of cocktails and beer with the bar’s pizza or tapas menu. If you’re around for happy hour (6-8pm) grab two drinks and get a free 10’’ pizza, or enjoy two for one cocktails, sharing is not obligatory.
