Starting life as an underground restaurant with its well-known fish tank-in-the-stairs, then opening a first floor bar. It has more recently added a boutique hotel, Velvet has become the glamour puss of Canal Street.  Decorated in red, rich purples and gold and with little chandeliers, Louis style chairs & sofas spread throughout the bar area, not forgetting the cosy banquette. Even the loos are hidden behind Renaissance-esque wall friezes and studded leather doors.

During the week the bar is relaxed and perfect for gossiping and swigging cocktails during happy hour. There are plenty to choose from and with prices that aren't sky high, it's easy to get carried away. We tried a Passion Berry, an Apple Crumble , a Tokyo Green Tea and went off menu with a French Martini, all of which were good. In the evenings on weekend, Velvet rocks a sparkly boob-tube and brings in some DJs to play disco, funk and house to a slightly older crowd avoiding the more commercial high energy bars. Throw in some friendly staff & the rocking atmosphere and you have yourself a happy BarChick.
