Sure, you love mezcal and tequila, but have you ever tried bacanora, sotol, raicilla or pox? What about Mexican whisky made from ancestral corn? Time to expand your horizons at Mayahuel, the drinking den hidden below Cavita in Marylebone. Upstairs, chef Adriana Cavita's namesake restaurant serves epic high-end Mexican cuisine. She tapped Manuel Lema, bartending veteran of agave heaven La Bodega Negra, to run the show downstairs, and he's turned it into a hub for the very best Mexican drinks. 

Enter through the restaurant or the separate entrance on Wigmore Street, and you'll find a romantic cave of a bar. Exposed brick and pipes, sleek spotlights and a dark, cosy booth create a rustic yet refined vibe. Get stuck into the cocktails straight away - the Grosello, with Mexicat Raicilla, Ancho Reyes, fresh lime juice and redcurrant, is an excellent starting point, and we also dig the Chilango Old Fashioned (Abasolo Whisky, Angostura Bitters, agave syrup, smoke and orange peel). Just be aware that these cocktails are highly sippable and priced around £20 each, meaning your bank account can quickly take a hit here. If beer's more your thing - it's certainly more economical, at £7 a pop - this place has an awesome selection of brews from Mexico too. 

Once you're warmed up, move onto some straight agave spirits sipping. Go for one of the flights, which have been curated to showcase the nuances and variety of Mexican spirits. Bonus: each measure is served with a garnish with complementary flavours (our cup of Ojo de Dios mezcal was accompanied by an orange slice and cricket salt, yum). And with a bangin' restaurant upstairs, the bar snacks here are obvs gonna be great. Order the smoked beef shin quesabirria - a taco-quesadilla hybrid loaded with crispy cheese dipped in a broth we'd happily bathe in - then try not to order another.
