BARCHICK SAYS

Cocktails are the main event at this elegant old world bar. Giant chandeliers dangle from high ceilings and waist-coated bartenders brew up impressive concoctions with flames and weird tools.

This place is a history lesson in good drinking. The menu is so fat you’ll hear it when it smacks on the table in front of you, it’s packed full of classics, spanning the entire recorded history of cocktails, as well as house inventions, all with their own back-stories. Why 1806? It’s the year the word ‘cocktail’ appeared in print, obvs. Too busy staring at your date’s rack to give it a proper read? Fine, just tell the bartender what you like and they’ll whip something up, as long as it’s not a Mojito, otherwise you can get the hell out.

Dimly lit, with corner couches and a mezzanine level filled with ornate armchairs and tiny tables, this place is classy, so act the part. Oh and downstairs is Understudy, another bar serving more experimental cocktails and hosting all kinds of food/drink events, as well as regular cocktail classes for anyone wanting to geek out.
