The European

BARCHICK SAYS

The European’s a bit of a Melbourne institution: aptly named, we’re not quite sure if it feels French or Italian, but it’s definitively old school. Expect clusters of wooden chairs and paneling, soft candlelight and black & white tiled floors, it’s pretty romantic if you’re into all that.

The wine list is where it’s at. If you’re wanting to spank cash on some vino, this is the place to do it – they have bottles with price tags ranging from ‘standard’ to ‘fancy’ to ‘call-your-mortgage-broker’. Don’t have a clue? The staff will sort you out. If you’re after a cocktail, you’ll have to go off menu but the staff will nail it if you keep it simple.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food is a European mishmash heavy on the French; hearty and classic dishes with a modern twist. Between caviar, bone marrow and beef wellington, things got pretty heavy – just save room for one of their seasonal soufflés to really finish yourself off with.
