BARCHICK SAYS

BarChick has a weakness for secret love affairs. Rome & Juliet, The Graduate, Mrs. Pound and Mr. Ming…  Yep, this speakeasy bar and Asian restaurant is named after a clandestine coupling, albeit fictional. Mrs. Pound was a 1950s Shanghai burlesque dancer who travelled the world, Mr. Ming was a conservative, wealthy gentleman from Hong Kong. We’ll leave you to work out the rest.

The result of the affair was Mr. Ming giving Mrs. Pound his favourite stamp shop so she could keep her location secret. So though this kinda store wouldn’t generally cause us to stop in our tracks, this spot in HK’s antique district is different. Pull on a glowing stamp and hey presto, it’s cocktail o clock. Not sure if you’re in the right place? The neon sign saying ‘this is not a stamp shop’ should clue you up.

When it comes to interiors, we like Mrs. Pound’s style. Hot pink, emerald green, neon… this place rocks. Check the clever merging between masculine and feminine spaces that signifies the lovers’ tastes. Butterflies, vintage photos and trinkets from Mrs. Pound’s dancing days are dotted throughout, and we felt right at home. The cocktail menu changes depending on seasonal ingredients and inspirations from Mrs. Pounds lifestyle. Sometimes this might mean a new beau, oo-er. We got comfy at the Instagram-dream of a bar and ordered a round of ‘Mr. Lee’s Invigorating Elixir’s alongside some Cheeseburger Spring Rolls. Well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
