Keep your eyes peeled for the Featherweight boxer hugging a heavy bag — the door beneath this exhausted man will transport you and your crew to some old-worldly kinda hangout. It took us a bit of trekking back and forth up Graham Avenue, so when we made it into this storage room turned tube-lit, copper and teal Navajo-Noir drinking den, we felt like champions. Thirsty champions.
Adjoining Sweet Science and equally accessible by its side door, Featherweight gives the illusion of being an unpretentious members only bar. Johnny de Piper, Kathryn Weatherup and Matthew Maddy are certainly not novices in the industry and everything about Featherweight is testament to that. We love their ‘70’s make-out playlist’ (Led Zeppelin/The Eagles) almost as much as the tiki style straw bar stools.
They have a gastronomical approach to concocting drinks with cocktail fusions so sumptuous they’re scrumptious. For ‘dinner’ we had the Harvest Moon, (rye, bonded apple brandy, maple syrup, fresh lemon juice and cayenne dusting) which tasted like applesauce and Christmas, and for ‘dessert’ we opted for the Velvet Curtain (Zaya 12 Year Old Rum, coffee liqueur and absinthe whipped cream), which was basically tiramisu in a coupe glass. The whole experience was a dream.
