Lantern's Keep

BARCHICK SAYS

Welcome to Paris in the 1900s, salon-style.

Forget the buzz of nearby Times Square. You’re about to enter an intimate bolt-hole of navy-panelled walls, powder-blue velvet seats, and the kind of romantic paintings you might’ve studied for GCSE Art.

The decor is elegant, historic, with a hint of luxury - all marble tabletops and glowing candlelight. The bartenders look dapper in their bow-ties as they serve up Prohibition-era inspired cocktails. Because vodka wasn’t a popular or sought-after spirit around the time then Lantern’s Keep doesn’t carry it. Fair play. We were all about the McKittrick Old Fashioned, made with Virgil Kaine Electric Owl bourbon and chocolate bitters. Feeling flush? There’s also a $90 Sazerac that uses Guillon-Painturaud Grande Champagne Cognac. Sure, we’ll take two.

Don’t leave without tucking into some of the bar bites. As expected, small plates have a distinctly French feel - Escargot de Bourgogne, Beef Tartare, and Croissant Pudding all tempt imbibers. It’s not easy to find Lantern’s Keep, tucked away in the hip Iroquois hotel, but it’s worth the hunt. One more thing - their House Rules state that ‘Anyone with a cat on his/her shoulder (but not a dog or a bird) gets one free drink; the cat gets a bowl of milk.’ BarChick has yet to test this out, but please let us know if you do.
