The Mexican speakeasy where BarChick was born…
Previously known as Mayahuel, the iconic temple to agave was taken over and has now been christened Mayamezcala. Fear not though, it's still got some of the kicka*s features that gave the original a special place in our hearts. There's a bunch of mezcals and tequilas (over 60 to choose from) and the cocktails are amazing. The atmosphere is sultry, sexy and dark, and it’s definitely the sort of place where you can get up to/get away with all sorts of mischief, with dark corners a plenty and lots of shadowy hideouts. Embrace the religious undertones, there are old church pews and confessional booths for getting intimate – so fess up, but don’t worry there’s no separation or curtain cr*p going on here.
It is very important when you’re here to hit the tequila, and hard. Choose from blanco, reposado or Anejo (beginners, fear not, this is the perfect place to start learning what's what!) or get involved with tequila's smokier cousin, mezcal.
Don’t neglect the cocktails. When we headed there, BarChick loved the award-winning Pine & Passsion. Mezcal, pineapple juice, lemon juice and passion fruit was always going to get our pulses racing. You’ll want to stay all night and you can because their Mexican food is amazing and will keep you going until the lights come on. Snack on tacos and nachos, or line your stomach with something a little heftier like their Carne Asada with steak fries. Aye Carumba!
