The Narrows

BARCHICK SAYS

We stumbled upon this place by accident. First up we got excited about the all-day $1 happy hour on oysters, and then about their sun trap patio outback, and finally the cocktails killed it: in short we found our new local.

The Narrows is tucked away behind a non-descript door off a busy Bushwick Street. Just wide enough to squeeze past the bar and stools into a backyard, it’s cosy in here and that’s how we like it. The styling is low key 1950s with bathroom doors that look like elevators, office directory style menus and a monochrome colour scheme. The drink names all have cultural nods: Caulfield (as in Holden from Catcher in the Rye, clever), Derringer (as in the 19th Century pistol, and it packs a punch) and Milano-Torino (as in the cycle race).

The food is banging and served late. Did we mention the $1oysters? Oh yeh and shrimp & grits for brunch or a gloriously messy Patty Melt. Get in. But what makes it awesome is they’re a super friendly bunch, with the owners still behind the bars slinging drinks and shooting the sh*t with the customers. Heads up, though: it’s cash only.
