Freuds

BARCHICK SAYS

As far as bars go, this one is impressive. What was once an old church is now Freuds; home to cocktails, pizzas and DJs (tick, tick, boom). This house of worship has been turned on its head, it’s now more of a house of sin… yet former relics have been retained. Sky-high ceilings, stained-glass windows and church pews remain as do religious artefacts on the walls. These feature side-by-side with the welcome addition of beer crates molded into seating on what was once the alter, and black boards line the walls as make-shift menus.

Open since the late 80s, this place is a firm favourite with Oxford locals. Take a big group of mates and climb up the striking stone steps between weathered pillars into this former Greek revival church. The long bronze bar serves up some tasty cocktails (and pizzas if you’re feeling peckish), with old favourites featured and a whole host of mega creations added to the mix. If you’re big on beer, be warned; there are no draughts only bottles on offer. A sprinkling of fairy lights and disco balls soften the once religious environment. It’s always fun and buzzing in here. Whoever Freud was… he sure knew how to party.
