The Magdalene Arms

BARCHICK SAYS

AA Gill gave this place a mega write up, which is never a good thing because you go expecting the world. We say go expecting a pretty perfect pub with a happy atmosphere. Looming over the Iffley Road, don’t be put off by its size because it’s still brimming with character. A big bar takes up the right hand side, there’s an open kitchen to the rear and bustling tables with happy diners dominate the rest of the space.

Play table football or sit at the bar and chat to the friendly staff, just don’t attempt to wow people on the piano, it’s not tuned and will have quite the opposite effect. If you’re in luck there will be tapas bits on the bar (a quid a nibble) depending on what the kitchen needs to use up. There is a big choice of wine in racks above the bar, or tuck into the spirits or drink beer, we liked the Devil’s Advocate on tap.

People mainly go here to eat, and it’s not hard to see why. They specialise in roasts so take a group of mates and tuck into a big piece a beef or lamb rustically placed in the middle of the table complete with all the trimmings. Now you can play host the roast without having to do the washing up, not a problem.
