Bar Bracarense

BARCHICK SAYS

This tiny hangout is what in Brazil they call boteco, a sort of Brazilian pub. The staff have been here forever and we’re pretty sure some of the punters have never left, but they don’t have to, it’s open 7 days a week.

Inside there’s a bar and not much else, the majority of seating’s outside on the pavement so you can sit with a few friends and put the world to rights.

This place has a decent selection of spirits but we recommend going back to basics with an ole Choppe Brahma beer (draft). This place is great if you are looking for some cheap drinks, cheap snacks and good chat. There is a local competition held every year in Rio called ‘Comida di Buteco’ so the food quality in these Buteco’s is usually high, but beware though as most dishes are fried. Go for ultra-traditional, bolinho de bacalhau (fried cod balls).

BarChick would like to bring her granddad here, and watch him mingle with the old Brazilian dudes as they chat about their wives, mistresses… and sport.
