Wine bar Love Tilly Devine pays homage to Sydney's crime boss of the 1900s, Matilda 'Tilly' Devine. Tilly was an infamous brothel madam, drug dealer and murderer who ran the streets of this area. An all-rounder! Thankfully the most dangerous thing about this cheekily named little wine bar is their killer wine selection.
It’s hidden away down a little alleyway in what was once an old wine storage room for the neighbouring Best Cellars. These guys have one of the most badass wine selections in town, seriously, it's almost overwhelming, so ask one of the sommeliers to recommend something.
It's a tiny room, you'll almost be sitting on your neighbour's lap (good for a frigid date!), but it's cosy, friendly and welcoming, with red brick walls and sexy dim lighting.
With almost 300 listings this place is all about the wine, but it would be a crime to miss out on the food. The daily changing menu, is made up of snacks like duck pate and bruschetta with ricotta and mint. We loved the old school glass milk bottle serves of wine, and the tank of wine (Demijohn for those in the know) it’s on the bar and is served by the pint. The owners say that they don't condone what Tilly did for a living, but they do like her spirit. Awesome, we think.
