BARCHICK SAYS

Hidden in a barbershop (yep, you guessed it) on York Street in the CBD is where you’ll find this city-click hipster hangout.

Just waltz on through the shopfront to the back and you’ll swiftly be surrounded by colonial décor, displaying an oddly cohesive mixture of antique cabinets, nautical artwork and taxidermied bison. With clusters of low tables, bar stools, a few ornate velvet couches and a selection of patio seating out the back, there is no shortage of places to perch while you scan the menu.

If the strapline “Because slick hairstyles, sharp blades and high-proof alcohol were meant to be together” doesn’t conjure up some murky Sweeney Todd imagery for you, the gin-heavy cocktail menu might help: The Cutthroat Martini (Bols Genever, Americano Rosso, Orange blossom

Dom Benedictine) and the Fleet Street (Gin, Chartreuse, Pineapple, Lemon & Bitters) had us feeling a bit creeped out. There is a long list of interesting sounding gins to peruse, and a decent selection of other spirits, wines and craft beers, too.
By way of food they serve just cheese or meat platters, but the spirited atmosphere lends itself perfectly to an after-work rendezvous, gin-based treat or, if you gents are feeling like it, a wet shave.
